Acer Predator Helios 300 review: Overclocked gaming laptop with a good display

Brute force hunter. With 17 inches, an expansive cooling system, and overclocking via button press, the Predator isn’t really sneaking up quietly, but rather aims to convince the gaming community with brute force. Our test shows whether this gameplan works out.

It’s been two years since we tested the last 17-inch Helios 300, so it’s about time now. Last year, only the 15-inch version of the Predator Helios 300 reached our test bench, and at that time it still used a Comet Lake CPU and RTX 3070. Now the 17-inch version is equipped with an Alder Lake CPU and RTX 3070 Ti with 150 watts.

For comparison, we let the current Helios compete against its 15-inch predecessor, and we also include the Razer Blade 17, the HP Omen 17, the Aorus 17(X), and the MSI Vector GP76.

The current Helios 300 still shows many similarities to its ancestor from two years ago, but there are also some differences. What remained the same is the matte-black color and the materials. While the top of the base and display are made of metal, the display bezels and bottom plate are made of plastic.

The “Predator” labeling disappeared from the inside and outside of the display lid, and you only see the symbol now. Another thing that has disappeared is the slim LED bars on the display lid.

Overall, the design is slightly more modest now, even if the new Predator still doesn’t really hide its gaming ambitions with its blue color accents, the slim LED bar in front, and the cooling system sticking out in the back.

The metal makes the display and base fairly robust with both of them remaining fairly stiff, only producing minimal creaking noises in our attempts of warping. On the other hand, the display creaks a bit more.

We did not notice any unusual gaps between the materials, and the workmanship is at a good level.

The 17-inch laptop is of course heavier and deeper than its 15-inch sibling, but it is also almost 5 mm (~0.2 in) thicker. With its cooling system sticking out in the back similar to the Alienware models, it has significantly more depth, which makes it larger than other 17-inch gaming laptops.

In terms of weight, it is also at least 100 grams (~3.5 oz) heavier than the competitors.

Two years ago, the 17-inch Predator didn’t have any connections in the back. This changes now, which also creates more space on the sides. The number of connections, however, remains the same. One of the USB-A ports was slightly updated, and the Thunderbolt USB-C port now supports DisplayPort. There is still no SD card reader.

In addition to the LAN connection, the device offers the Killer Wi-Fi 6E AX1675i WLAN module, which also allows you to surf within the 6-GHz network.

While the transfer rates are decent, they are still about 10% slower that the average possible with this module. The Blade 17 is also around 10% faster. On the other hand, the performance is constant.

What is also new is the 1080p webcam with face recognition, which produces fairly decent pictures indoors in good lighting conditions. The colors, however, are not so impressive.

A Kensington Lock is supported, as also TPM 2.0. On the other hand, a fingerprint sensor is lacking, but we can forgive that. What is harder to take is the lack of a webcam shutter.

Acer is greedy with accessories, and none are included. In Germany, the warranty period covers two years with shipping service.

You have to remove 11 similar-length Philips screws to take off the bottom of the case. But even then, the case bottom remains fixed very tightly and is extremely hard to pry open. The best way to do this is to start in the front corners since it is not clear where the bottom plate ends in the back. Because of the soft plastic bottom, you also have to be very careful using suitable prying tools.

Once you have removed the bottom plate, you get access to the SSD, fans, Wi-Fi module, and battery. The DDR5-RAM is also accessible, but it sits underneath an additional metal cover that you have to remove with another screw.

Acer uses a keyboard with a number block and “Pulsar” background illumination that can also be adjusted for each key individually. The number block also includes a special key that is reserved for opening the Predator Sense software, which functions as some sort of control center.

The keys themselves have a rather short to medium stroke, but they offer a clear pressure point, resulting in good feedback. The keyboard allows you to type fairly fast and comfortably. The typing noise is very moderate, but the space key is slightly louder.

Under pressure, the center of the keyboard can be bent down, but this won’t be the case during regular typing. 

The touchpad, which we had criticized two years ago, received an overhaul.

At about 12.15 x 8.3 cm (~4.8 x 3.3 in), the touchpad offers good sliding characteristics, and the integrated keys also have a comfortable and easily noticeable pressure point. The click noises are also moderate here.

Acer uses a matte IPS display from BOE with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels (16:9) and a 165 Hz refresh rate. Alternative options are only available for the 15-inch Predator (Full HD).

At a brightness of 340 Nits, not only does the panel surpass its predecessor, but also the Blade 17. The brightness distribution is relatively even at 85%.

The black value and contrast correspond to a good class average. However, we are unable to confirm the advertised response time of only 3 ms, but instead, we measure about 11 ms for the change from black to white. The panel doesn’t suffer from PWM.

The covered color space is fairly good and able to compete with that of the Razer Blade. In addition to the full sRGB color space, DisplayP3 is also covered to almost 97%, and AdobeRGB is still to around 85%.

The display is adjusted fairly well in the state of delivery, and calibration with our Portrait Display Calman color calibration tool only brings minimal improvement. This makes calibration by the users really unnecessary.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession – a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 19625 (minimum: 5 – maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

Outdoors, the 340-nit brightness, and matte display surface will bring some advantages. However, you should still look for a shady place to avoid direct sunlight.

With a Core i7-12700H and RTX 3070 Ti, the Helios can be placed in the upper midrange to the high end of the gaming class. The processors are accompanied by ample 32 GB of DDR5 RAM and a 1 TB storage solution. With this, the laptop should be able to reproduce almost all the current games in the native resolution smoothly.

The Predator Sense software is preinstalled as control center software. For the best benchmark results, we choose the “Extreme” performance mode, where the CPU and GPU are probably slightly “overclocked.” Beyond Extreme, there is also a Turbo mode, for which there is also an extra key to activate or deactivate. However, the fans are always running at full speed for this, so for us, the Extreme mode, which is not really quiet either, should be sufficient.

The software also allows you to make various adjustments to the fan control, performance, etc., in addition to configuring the RGB background illumination. Users should therefore take a closer look at this software.

The Intel Core i7-12700H often takes part in our gaming laptop tests. The CPU from Intel’s Alder Lake generation offers 6 Performance and 8 Efficiency cores with 20 threads and a clock speed of 1.8 to 4.7 GHz. It should be able to handle all the games well.

With the Extreme mode, the CPU performance is very good, reaching significantly above that of an average i7-12700H due to the slight overclocking – at least in our Cinebench R15 loop. The very constant performance at a TDP of about 120 watts is also convincing.

With this, our test unit beats the comparison devices, and only MSI Vector is able to half-way keep up. The Helios beats the predecessor with Comet Lake by almost 100% in the multi-thread tasks. However, the single-core performance is only average.

If you switch to the quieter Standard mode, the TDP only reaches the full 120 watts in the first run. After that, it ranges more around 85 watts within one run. Afterwards, the Helios is unable to maintain the maximum of 2,840 points as in the Extreme mode but drops to about 2,230 points after the first few runs.

In battery mode, the performance is limited drastically. Even though the TDP briefly reaches about 40 watts, after one second it always ends up at only around 21 watts.

In The Witcher 3, the Helios runs a head-to-head race with the MSI Vector. Due to the Extreme mode, it fares very well overall during gaming, reaching on average about 10% above an average RTX 3070 Ti. During gaming, the quasi predecessor is surpassed by about 30% (however: Extreme mode vs. Normal mode). The device only doesn’t seem to like DOTA 2 Reborn.

In Standard mode, the frame rate in The Witcher 3 ends up about 10 fps lower (~110 vs 100 fps).

Even though the frame rate in The Witcher 3 also remains very constant over time, the Helios doesn’t seem to get any particular advantage over Blade 17 in this.

The GPU clock speed remains fairly constant at about 1.6 GHz, with the GPU warming to a temperature of 71 °C (160 °F). The graphics card consumes 150 watts almost throughout the whole time, but this is also what it is designed for.

To be clear, in the Extreme mode, the Helios 300 is one of the loudest devices we ever tested. Even during idle operation, the fans already whir at more than 40 dB, which is very loud. While gaming or during the stress test, the noise level then increases to more than 60 dB! The similarly powerful MSI Vector already reaches 56 dB, but the rest of the competitors are significantly quieter at around 50 dB.

For more sensitive ears, we, therefore, recommend the Standard mode, with which we measure “only” 50 dB in The Witcher 3, instead of 62 dB. During idle operation, this mode remains significantly quieter, and in parts, the fans then even remain completely turned off or they whir quietly at 25.6 dB. In our opinion, the small performance increase in the Extreme mode is hardly worth the extreme noise level.

The cores start our stress test at up to 3.8 GHz. After about 2 minutes, they reach temperatures of 100 °C (212 °F), resulting in a drop of the TDP from 100 – 110 watts to only 65 watts. Correspondingly, the clock speeds also drop to around 2.1 GHz, with the Efficiency cores being significantly faster at around 2.9 GHz than the more powerful Performance cores (ca. 1.5 GHz). The CPU temperature levels out at about 85 °C (185 °F).

During the test, the GPU clock speed varies between 1.1 and 1.8 GHz, with the storage speed also varying slightly (1.5 – 1.8 GHz). But the temperature is not as high at around 71 °C (160 °F) and a maximum of 75 °C (167 °F). On average, the GPU only consumes 118 watts of power.

The speakers are disappointingly quiet for the 17-inch form factor. While the high frequencies are good, the mids and even the bass are at least still average. A headset port in the 3.5-mm format is available for analog audio devices.

In comparison, the power consumption is slightly higher than that of the competitors. While gaming at least, the Helios also consumes the most power with its good performance. Even the similarly fast Vector consumes about 30 watts less when playing The Witcher 3.

We measure brief consumption peaks of 290 watts. While gaming, the consumption is around 230 watts. The very wide but also slim power supply is specified at 280 watts, so it should always be able to recharge the laptop.

Acer uses a 90-Wh battery here, so with the exception of the Aorus, all the competitors use smaller batteries.

Depending on the screen brightness, the battery lasts between 5 and 6 hours of surfing or around 6 hours of playing videos. Of the competitors, only the HP Omen does slightly better here, so the battery life is ok. On the other hand, the Blade 17 also achieves a similar battery life with a smaller battery (82 Wh).

By the way, since neither the Standard nor the Silent mode drops the refresh rate automatically to 60 Hz, our battery measurements are based on the default refresh rate of 165 Hz.

The Predator is large, heavy, and loud, but also offers plenty of performance according to gamers. However, the good performance isn’t all, and the fairly good display also surprises us with 97% coverage of the DisplayP3 color space. It is also able to prevail against the panel in Blade 17.

An overclocked gaming laptop – or its user – also has to struggle with the usual disadvantages we mentioned above. On the other hand, overclocking is optional, and those who like it quieter and can live with a few less frames per second can also switch to the significantly more moderate Standard mode. Then the Helios 300 won’t be any louder than the competitors.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 PH317 offers a good display and even two overclocking modes with correspondingly powerful performance. Even though this is achieved with the usual disadvantages, those modes are optional.

Among the competitors, the Razer Blade 17 recommends itself. Although it doesn’t offer the same amount of brute performance, it also remains relatively quiet and cool. If it has to be a similarly high performance, you might also take a look at the MSI Vector, which consumes slightly less power at an almost similarly high performance.
